“She was my first love, and I loved her as only a boy loves.” James Weldon JohnsonThis was not a happy story for most of our journey. The title tells us that it is the story of our dear Colonel and Charlotte. Well, we know from canon that being the second son, our dear Colonel needed someone that possessed a fortune and had proper connections. Charlotte Lucas has neither. After years of friendship, our dear Colonel had to walk away from true love. This was so disturbing. It was evident that he loved her and that she loved him.
We traveled with our dear Colonel as he fought in various conflicts and was wounded. We saw him bravely conduct himself properly and with honor. We watched as he traveled to Kent and discovered that Charlotte was married to that sycophant parson of his aunt, Lady Catherine. We watch him work to bring Kent back into some sort of order after his aunt’s neglect and abuses. This was tough, although beautifully written. The heart strings are definitely pulled. We have very little of Darcy & Elizabeth in the beginning of the story. They come in later.
The tone of the story shifts several times and you feel it as circumstances change with our characters. You are pulled through the mud with our dear Colonel and grieve with him at the various losses he has to endure. I was beginning to worry that he would never have the desire of his heart.
There is a strong religious tone and message to the story. It depicts people coming to the end of themselves and reaching out to a higher power. It came on slowly and got stronger throughout the rest of the story. The author was not subtle with the message of forgiveness, redemption and restoration.
There were several threads running along with the Colonel and Charlotte. We had Anne de Bourgh and her story of restored health and of her finding love. We then had the thread of what happened to Lady Catherine and Mr. Collins. There was also Georgiana as she came of age and found love. These story threads changed the tone considerably as we switched back and forth until our dear Colonel could come into his own.
The epilogue was delightful. It was fun to see how things turned out. I couldn’t help but smile.

Tree of Life ~ Charlotte the Colonel A Pride Prejudice Companion Story edition by Ginger Monette Religion Spirituality eBooks Reviews
The story begins with the Lucas family spending summers with the Fitzwilliam family during their early childhood. Charlotte finds love but cannot hold onto it. The Colonial relives his choices while trying to get over his love of Charlotte. When he finds that she married Mr. Collins while visiting his Aunt Lady Catherine with Darcy we see why he finds Lizzy's company so appealing. It explains his many visits to the Collin's during the Easter visit in P&P by Austin. This goes into how Charlotte and the Colonel react to each other and hold back their feelings. I enjoyed this book.
I liked a lot about this novel! I liked the character development of Charlotte and the colonel and the story was entertaining as well. It did get a little preachy but it was not constant by any means and the author fit it in in an easy to read way, or perhaps I just needed to hear what she was delivering. Anyway, I think it was satisfying and well written
I enjoyed this book. Talk about love lost and love gained. It was a nice story about two people who cared for each other down through the years whose lives finally came together. Makes me think of opportunities lost and those gained. How important it is to let people know we care and follow through.
This is a nice, clean romance for all ages. It is one I will read again and enjoy even more. I look forward to Ms. Monette's next book.
Very interesting variation of Austen 's Pride and Prejudice. Enjoyed the story of Charlotte and Richard. Darcy and Elizabeth were in this story, but more in the background, as were the Bingley's. The recovery of Anne de Bourgh was remarkable. To think her mother made her suffer all those because she was too proud to have someone know of her condition. In the end, Catherine de Bourgh got hers. Good story.
First thing to note is that, as appropriate to the times, religin and expectations rule. This is critical if they are not your flavor, but then you would not read regency/Austen if this was not as expected.
The characters of these two are not, in fact, changed and that is the greatest part, just a subverted story line that finds love equal to Elizabeth and Darcy where it is most unexpected....
I am very glad that I read the book. The only thing keeping me from writing in 5 stars is that there was a bit of a long winded set of pages between the understanding that it was impossible and the desired/expected happy ending. I do like that almost all of the characters that matter were mentioned and I like that Charlotte was a heroine in her own right, more so than the one known for removing Collins as a road block....I will likely read this again in years to come.
I loved this book! A number of reviewers have complained about the overt references to God and an overall Christian theme. I suggest you ignore that and first focus on the story and then you will see why it all works. I am the first to admit I like a "racy" Darcy and Elizabeth from time to time, and I also like the self described "sweet " stories, too. This one has a complexity of character development you will not want to miss.
As much as I love Pride and Prejudice, I often hesitate to read other stories based on the characters concerned that the authors will not be true to the characters or the time period. I am delighted to find that Tree of Life adheres to both in earnest. I am particularly thrilled to see that it centers around two of my favorite secondary characters, Charlotte and the Colonel. The plot is complex enough that you cannot guess every turn and thoroughly satisfying in its resolutions. The slightly more overt spiritual tone, which is the main distinction from the Austen sensibility, is neither heavy handed nor preachy and serves to weave the story together beautifully. I am looking forward to reading it again one day which is the highest praise I can offer.
